LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
A wealthy rancher, Frank Carter (Ralph Bellamy), hires four tough gunslingers to rescue his wife (Claudia Cardinale), who is being held captive by Captain Rasa (Jack Palance), one of Pancho Villa's most desperate revolutionaries, in this dynamic and hard-hitting Western set against the backdrop of the Mexican Revolution of 1917. The wild West commando team consists of a dynamite expert (Burt Lancaster), an ex-revolutionary and munitions expert (Lee Marvin), a horse specialist (Robert Ryan), and a tracker (Woody Strode). On their mission to return Carter's highly prized wife, they track the Mexican revolutionaries through rough and rugged desert terrain, determined to outsmart, outshoot, and outride anyone they come across--until they meet the the charismatic Rasa and discover that Carter's seductive wife is in love with the Mexican outlaw and has no intention of returning with the band of "professionals." Based on the novel A MULE FOR THE MARQUESA by Frank O'Rourke, this beautifully rendered Western features a star-studded cast delivering finely crafted and charismatic performances. Burt Lancaster is at his acrobatic and mercurial best as the rowdy gunslinger.

LaserDisc Movie Review:
Grant (Ralph Bellamy) is a wealthy rancher who hires a trio of mercenaries to retrieve his wife Maria (Claudia Cardinale) from the clutches of the desperado Raza (Jack Palance) in this western adventure set in 1917. Dolworth (Burt Lancaster) is a munitions expert who joins gunslinger Fardan (Lee Marvin) and longbow master Jake (Woody Strode) after being offered $10,000 apiece for the safe return of Grant's kidnapped wife. The trio travels 100 miles into Mexico to retrieve the woman, who they later discover wants to remain with Raza. Soon the four are chased across the border by the enraged Raza and his equally deadly female accomplice Chiquita (Marie Gomez). The film received Academy Award nominations for "Best Direction" (Richard Brooks), "Best Screenplay" (Brooks again), and "Best Cinematography" (Conrad L. Hall). --- Dan Pavlides

Much like star Lee Marvin's later success, 1967's The Dirty Dozen, The Professionals is a finely crafted action picture with an impressive and entertaining ensemble cast. Marvin was in the most successful period of his career, and his performance in The Professionals --- along with his turns in Dozen and Point Blank the following year --- conveyed his distinctive tough persona better than any of his other work. Produced, written, and directed by Hollywood veteran Richard Brooks, the movie also features notable supporting work by Burt Lancaster, Robert Ryan, and Jack Palance. Brooks and cinematographer Conrad Hall would re-team for the stark crime story In Cold Blood. --- Brendon Hanley
