LaserDisc Movie Storyline:
Sydney Pollack directs this whimsical remake of the 1954 romantic comedy by Billy Wilder. Greg Kinnear and Harrison Ford deftly portray the two wealthy Larrabee brothers, who end up fighting over the affections of their chauffeur's daughter. When Sabrina (Julia Ormond) originally attempts to win over David Larrabee (Greg Kinnear), the younger of the two brothers, and the notorious playboy whom her father works for, he barely even knows she's alive. To help get her mind off David, Sabrina's dad sends her on a trip to Paris, where she trains to become a fashion photographer. In Europe, the mousy young girl blossoms into a beautiful woman before returning to the Larrabee estate on Long Island. At first David doesn't recognize the altered Sabrina. Once he does, however, he falls hard, which jeopardizes his impending marriage to Elizabeth, a wealthy doctor. This turn of events greatly concerns his older, more serious brother, Linus (Harrison Ford), who's counting on the marriage to cement a merger between his company and a business owned by Elizabeth's rich father. So Linus decides to woo Sabrina, hoping she'll fall for him and forget his brother. However, the scheme backfires when Linus himself begins to find the charming Sabrina irresistible.

LaserDisc Movie Review:
A remake of a 1954 Billy Wilder romance, this updated version of the play Sabrina Fair was directed by Sydney Pollack. Julia Ormond stars as Sabrina Fairchild, the daughter of a kindly chauffeur (John Wood) at the Long Island estate of the upper crust Larrabee family. Sabrina has grown up enchanted from afar with the Larrabees' sparkling world of privilege and wealth, but she's especially enamored of younger Larrabee brother David (Greg Kinnear), a charming womanizer. After the once plain Sabrina returns from a sojourn in Paris transformed into a remarkably poised and attractive young woman, she at long last catches David's eye. In a calculated effort to manipulate David away from her and into a more financially advantageous marriage, older brother Linus (Harrison Ford) pretends to woo Sabrina himself, but finds himself unintentionally falling in love. --- Karl Williams

A rather pointless redo of the 1954 Audrey Hepburn-Humphrey Bogart classic, this remake of Sabrina at least has all the right components: an attractive, capable cast, solid director, exquisite production values, and a fairly amusing screenplay. What it doesn't have is good old-fashioned romantic ardor. The two leads convey a rather icy demeanor despite their good performances, and Sydney Pollack's film too often mistakes tastefulness for truly satisfying entertainment, with a story revolving around the Long Island elite that isn't as fresh today, and class implications of its main characters that fail to register when everything around them shimmies so brightly. Still, Sabrina is an innocent pleasure overall for viewers who aren't expecting the same film as the original version, and the supporting cast sparkles, with Greg Kinnear especially winning in his film debut. Despite the abundance of lovely actresses, this was reportedly a difficult film to cast in terms of its leading lady. Julia Ormond was chosen over several other contenders, including Juliette Binoche, who would win an Academy Award for The English Patient the very next year. --- Jason Clark
